Things I Hate About Christmas - Part 1

Okay I don't *hate* Christmas. I dislike it though.

I find it stressful, a tad frivolous, and if I may invoke some cliche cynicism for a second, am one of those people that wish others could adopt the yule tide cheer that invokes giving and being good to their fellow man year round.

But I do like to laugh at things, and what better way to hate on something than to get a good joke out of it? So I decided to count down to the 25th with a list of things that make me hate Christmas.

#1. PANNETONE

If you aren't Italian or aren't at least of some form of European descent (though I read that Latin Americans love this shit too) then you probably don't know what Pannetone is. The best way I can describe it is that its 85% bread, 10% cake, 1% raisins or some other weird Christmas fruit and 3% constituents unknown. Sometimes it has like chocolatey/coffee swirls, I don't even know for sure cause I won't touch this shit.

I just came from the European grocery/deli and they have a god damn fortress of this stuff inside. Seriously, it's fucking everywhere.

You know on Halloween how you get Candy Corn and you're all WTF am I gonna do with this? Pannetone is to Christmas as Candy Corn is to Halloween. I guess you could compare it to fruit cake, but I have had fruit cake and at least that is semi dessert/sweet related.

This is more like your parents trying to pass off mashed potatoes as ice cream. It looks like cake, and you would *think* its cake, but it's far from it. Cake is soft and delicious and usually has some sort of creamy frosting. This is dry and hard with weird pieces of fruit that don't even seem like fruit.

Every damn year, my dad would buy this stuff and every year we would get repulsed it so much that my brother and I still joke about it. Every year, whenever we happened to see our father he would, like clockwork, show up with Pannetone and EVERY YEAR we would tell him he hated it, at which pointlike a broken record, he would proceed to tell us how great it was. He's coming this year and I have no doubt when I go to pick him up at their airport, he'll have it in hand with some sort of long winded story about how he couldn't check it in case it got damaged because he knows how much I like it.

Pannetone makes me hate Christmas.

"Here are a bunch of Rap Treats from motherfuckin' Dr. Dre. They are the mix tapes that Dre did from 1985 to 1989 including the 5 tapes he did for the Rodium Swap Meet. We actually posted a few of these before that you can check HERE and HERE but I figured all the tapes on one post makes more sense. These tapes are dope. Every song on them is a big tune and Dre went off on the mix. It sounds like he used an 8 track because most of these, especially the Rodium tapes, are the definition of a megamix. On top of that, Dre also jumps on the mic and gets Eazy-E and Ice Cube to rock some intros. The crazy thing to me is that Dre's career was in full effect when he was making these (first with the World Class Wrecking Crew and then with N.W.A.). It's dope to me that Dre still has the itch to put out mix tapes when N.W.A. was changing the rap game and getting the feds excited. Remember, these are Mix Tapes. Which means they were recorded off cassette tapes so embrace the hiss and take them for what they are - a slice of history. Anyone who knows me well knows that Halloween is, by far, my favorite time of the year. For me it's better than New Years. Let's examine the facts here.

This year I'm happy to be playing not one, but two events with some of my favorite people.

First up, at Salon Officiel where I do my monthly first Friday, things are gonna be getting crazy with myself and king crazy himself SEAN KOSA. A Nightmare on Roy Street is going to be FREE on October 29th, so grab a costume (or don't) and come out early. Fridays have been well at capacity at Salon Officiel lately and this event promises no different.

If you're in the mood for something bigger, or just wanna see a fucking stand up show, you're definitely gonna want hit the yearly Neon/Highfood jam VOYEUR. Headlining this one will be Motor and if you haven't checked them out yet then stop sleeping and get the fuck on it. Montreal dark lord Jordan Dare will be holding things down and I'll be opening up at the start of night, in full costume. Tickets are only 15$ in advance, more at the door.

I was invited to be a guest on Radio Centre Ville this Saturday morning with the lovely Natalie Perez who does a show called 'Tracking Changes'.

I met Natalie the night of the Red Bull 3Style where she explained to me she had a weekly radio show (like for real radio that you can turn a dial to listen to, fancy that) themed on having inviting guest musicians from various backgrounds to have a chat about music, what they do personally and to play some music they enjoy. It's a really cool concept. She had actually never interviewed a DJ before and I'v never had to talk on the radio before, so it was a new and fun experience for both of us.

My editor and friend at dogsonacid.com, Khal, asked me to do a 'Best Of' mix at the end of last year for his blog rockthedub.com. As the New Year started to approach I shyly asked if he was up for it again, to which he replied 'You know it Shawty' or something to that effect, in his fantastic trademark demeanor.

When I had to pick the tracks for this mix I started thinking and realized, when I went back in my head some 10+ years, that I don’t think I have been this excited about Jungle/Drum & Bass in a long time, quite possibly not since I first started listening to it. 2009 breathed new life into me as a DJ, a writer/reviewer, and most importantly as die-hard fan.

REVIEW || Vibration Therapy EP

We'll be honest, when we opened a 4 track EP from 4 producers we had never heard anything about before we didn't have the highest expectations. But that’s what great about a surprise: it’s something you didn’t even know you wanted until you got it. And a surprise is exactly what the Vibration Therapy is; an unexpected and unforeseen release that will make you take notice. What sticks out most about these 4 tunes is how incredibly simple yet effective they all are and serve as a nice reminder that a good track is really only as good as the necessary framework. Tunes don’t always needs layers upon layers to make good, solid impact. There’s always got to be a stand out track to an EP and for Vibration Therapy, that track is Arclight’s ‘Over Me’, hands down. The vocals from Jocasta are not only painfully poetic but beautifully sang in an extremely unique manner, it’s not the voice of a typical DnB, diva songstress, making the tune stand out all the more. Inside Man’s ‘Backspace’ is far more stripped down and bass heavy though maintains a deepness throughout thanks to constant pads that drop back in the second you think they may have faded away for good. ‘Be Mine’, courtesy of ATP, is straightforward liquid through and through, though with bit less of the standard jazz element and a lot more funk, therefore avoiding the redundancy that can occasionally come with the sub genre. A tight combination of male and female vocal snippets finish this one off nicely. Last, but certainly not least, So Flow brings it deep and melodic on ‘Thorn’ and the piano chord lead, alongside what is yet another emotional vocal clip, is enough to warm even our cold heart. Can you tell that we are impressed yet? Because in case you can’t already tell, we are impressed. Keep an eye out for these guys, because things are only going to get better from here.

REVIEW - Acts of Mad Men - Viper Recordings

If you’re looking for a solid compilation that is diverse and worth every penny you will invest into it then you need not look beyond the new Acts of Mad Men on Viper Recordings[b]. Made up of some serious weight thanks to slew of producers, we are happy to say there is a lack of filler tunes that one often gets when purchasing a full length LP, especially for a release that has as many tunes as this (there’s 17 total). What’s more, for the average fan who is just going to have a listen at home, you can tell there has been a bit of thought into the order the tracks appear in, an often overlooked but key factor for replay value of an a album from start to finish. We’re not lying when we say we could literally write a decent review of every track on this album and Viper chose one hell of a way to end 2009, that’s for sure. If we have to pick some favorites, in this reviewers opinion at least, it’s a toss-up between the [b]Shock One remix of Brookes Brothers ‘Crackdown’ and the appearance of Ed Rush and Optical with their take on Sigma’s ‘Hi Top’. Matrix and Futurebound deliver a track that is, frankly, standard Matrix and Futurebound ie: exactly what it should be. Deep and rolling, their version of Ian Carey’s ‘Get Shakey’ is going to be one that gets the ladies going in the dance, and in our experience when the ladies are happy, the rest of the room follows suit. DC Breaks’ ‘Polar Bear is hard and heavy, but not so rough that is loses its groove one bit, while Camo & Crooked come correct on not one, but two tracks on the CD. We could sit here and give a detailed run down of each of the tunes, but seriously, just go out and grab it, because you won’t regret that you did. We don’t feel shy saying that Acts of Mad Men is the Drum & Bass LP of the year.

Long Dark Tunnel - The Reload

We did the second of what looks like is going to be series of Jungle/Drum & Bass one offs last night. While the first focused on strictly old school - we're talking '92-'96 business, amens, chipmunk vocals, pianos and all - this time around things took a natural and much needed trip through the tech step era though the Jungle still came correct.

Nothing after '99 was pretty much the rule and the result was deep bass, fist pumping, wall banging, technical difficulties and too many rewinds to count. The lights came up but the party went on just a little longer.

Review - J.Majik and Wickaman - Feel About You

The little bit of digging we did in regards to Mosquito Music didn’t turn up as much as we would have hoped so we can only do our best by telling you that they have done the right thing by ways of the choice for their first release. J.Majik & Wickaman’s ‘Feel About You’ is a hard hitting, crowd stomping, female vocal smasher, hands down. It’s the type of tune that you don’t even have to be near a dance floor to be able to imagine the way the crowd will errupt when it drops. What’s morewith 3 mixes of this track to choose from, if one doesn’t strike a chord with you, there is a safe bet to say that one or both of the remaining two will. Original Sin comes with the remix, which is much more amped up when it comes to bassline lead, but lets the vocal take a bit of a back seat. It’s still present no doubt, but if full on vocals aren’t so much your thing, you may opt for this version as opposed to the OG. Switching things up completely, J.Majik & Wickaman’s have also done the Zulu mix of the track, which comes on the form of a bass heavy Electro banger. It is, admittedly, a tad on the wobbly side, but that low end it so serious and that vocal is cut up so well that it’s pretty hard to not want to bob you head after you give it a listen. That being said, given the diverse nature of the 3 different mixes and the obvious fact that the vocal is pure hit material, this is going to be one you are hearing for the next little while most def.

REVIEW - Original Sin - Grow Your Wings Album Sampler

Original Sin has def made his mark in the last few years and with release after release being eaten up by the masses like hungry orphans, he has more than solidified his name on the lips of Junglists around the world. It goes without saying then that his forthcoming Grow Your Wings EP, his first, is highly anticipated by fans and given the time at which it will drop (it’s set to his stores December 7th) will likely be one of the albums that helps us end 2009 with a bang for all things Drum & Bass. The two sampler tunes are enough to predict that Grow Your Wings is likely going to do very well not only sales wise but also in the dance. ‘Therapy’ may fool you into thinking that it’s taking you somewhere ambient, but when the arpeggio on that synth line starts increasing in both volume and intensity, you know ambient in the last direction this is going. What’s more, this one doesn’t just drop into your standard Jump-Up, Sin busts out some absolutely devastating amen cut ups paired with some severe reece action. ‘Kiss’ takes a much more laid back, almost old school approach thanks to much lighter drum work, smooth female vocals, soft pads and chords. A simple, but memorable bass line finishes this one off perfectly and the result is a well rounded tune that is catchy with straight forward hooks and easy to get stick in your head. Safe to say the sampler definitely has us itching to hear the rest of the EP because if these two tunes are anything to show for it, there’s def going to be some other gems on there.

REVIEW - Alix Perez 1984

Some people may disagree, but we’ve been long time believers, and stand by our belief strongly still, that a full length album should result in showcasing not only the producers abilities but also a bit of their range. While some listeners are disappointed in certain cases that albums ‘aren’t what they expected’, you have to ask yourself this: What is the point of producing or, as a fan, purchasing and listening to an album’s worth of tracks that all sound alike? That being said, the finished product of Alix Perez’s 1984 is both a diverse piece of work and something that is truly made with keeping listener in mind, rather than simply those purchasing singles for their next big gig. The album overall is extremely minimal, a characteristic that is carried through beginning to end and if you’re familiar with, or already a fan of Perez’ sound, this won’t come as a surprise really. The stand-out element through the album is not only the use of vocals but the quality of the vocalists he has obviously carefully selected to work with. Aces, seriously. The track list covers an impressive range from start to finish; ‘The Cut Deepens’ is not Drum & Bass per say, but given its big bassline and tempo, will likely serve as a great segue to switch things up for those DJs out there adventurous and skilled enough to pull it off. ‘I’m Free’ and ‘Voices’ will likely have you long time DnB heads reminiscing of the late 90’s Techy era, while ‘No Grudge’ could be classified in the dubstep arena. Collabs with Zero-T, Spectrasoul, Sabreand more round the album off out with a nice roster of guests producers very different from the next, also adding to the albums myriad of styles. Finish it off with some borderline cinematic intros and interludes and the result is one album that flows consistently and effectively from one thing to the next in proper fashion. 1984 is in stores now!

REVIEW: AUDIO PORN 007

Audio Porn keeps its momentum moving steadily forward thanks to its newest, which comes from an almost super hero like alliance. Shimon, Moving Fusion and Ant Miles joined forces for this one and in the process made Audio Porn 007 not only an impressive collaboration of artists but also an impressive release period. ‘Pimp Slap’ starts off with one of those intros we love; You not only get a great idea of where this tune is going, but more importantly that excitement that comes from knowing that wherever it ends up is going to be somewhere you want to go. The name will be no surprise once you have a listen, as this is one that will conjure up vivid imagery in your head high speed car chases in 70’s Blaxploitation movies.. If Shaft operated at around 176 beats per minute, this would be his theme song. Not to be merely put aside, ‘Underbelly’ on the flip also holds its own weight. A bit more shuffle on the break throughout this one, some short, techy stab sand a lot more emphasis placed on the low end versus the fast moving background atmosphere on ‘Pimp Slap’. Though ‘Pimp Slap’ is for sure the high light of this release, copping Audio Porn 007 will result in having a nice choice of two great tracks to play. Grab it, you won’t be sorry.

REVIEW: Break - Return to the Temple EP - Shogun Audio

It’s safe to say that whatever comes from Breakthese days is more than solid, to say the least. He’s come off a long run of killer material and the same seems to ring true with the Return to the Temple EP, which is coming to us from none other than Shogun Audio. ‘Winter Sun’ by far stood out as the fave of the total 4 tracks (though each does an excellent job of standing its own ground and lending its own bit of diversity to the group as a whole). A Liquid banger through and through, this track is exactly what Liquid should be – smooth, soulful and deep but heavy enough still to drop in the main room at prime time. Some note worthy characteristics which also set this one apart are the cut up amen fills used oh so sparingly but effectively as well as the wah-wah guitar in the background. Nice. ‘Now It’s Going’ is a tad more heavy, and the more stripped down, bare bones Break that has been his signature as an artist for some time now - this one gets right to the point and rolls hard. Watch out for those Neuro fills with the big bad stretched out reece. Epic. ‘Let It Happen’ has an semi Dubwise feel to it and the bassline by far is the star of this one, one track that will guarantee to blow your mind when heard on a real nice club set it. This one is simple but does the job and we predict it to be the most rinsed of all these 4 tracks. Last but not least, ‘After Shower’ shows a side not much explored by Break thanks to cut up drums and big rolls. The bassline leads this one once again, and again you can hear the Dubby influence, but having the rolling drums replaced with loops that focus more on edits make this one not only a unique track from the album, but a unique track for Break himself as a producer.

If you didn't notice already, WE MOVED!

About 5 years ago, I tried to buy the domain name djmayday.com for my personal use, but hit a snag when the name had been acquired by a web company who buys domain names and sells them off to people for ridiculous prices. Still, I made a point the check the domain every now and again, just in case it became available.

Well, it looks like the idiots let it expire, or just realized no one would pay them $1500 for the site, because I checked the other day and it was finally available.

That being said, all information on fullscaleriot.com has been moved here, to djmayday.com, so you can check here in the future for information, mixes, event info in regards to my DJing . Not sure what I am going to do with the fullscaleriot.com domain in the meantime, we'll see.

VICTORY=> I Won the Meg/Diesel:U:Music DJ Battle

Last night I had the chance to perform at the DIESEL store here in Montreal. Diesel:u:Music in association with the blog Montreal State of Mind and of course MEG Montreal held a competition where DJs from around the city submitted mix CDs. Five finalists were chosen, who had just a half an hour to showcase their skills in front of a panel of judges, who included representatives from MEG, Mistress Barbara and Ghyslain Poirer.

All the DJs had their own strengths, but I am happy to say that I came out on top and won the contest and will be opening the MEG Boat Party on August 2nd.

Victory.

May and June we're a bit too much events wise and I decided to pump the brakes a bit and take less shows, mostly because I am tired of staying out late all the time. Still I have some good things lined up for the rest of July and August, so if you're in the Montreal Area, here's where you can catch me.

Well the cool news lately is that I made it into the final five for the Diesel:U/Meg Boat DJ Contest which is taking place next Thursday at the Diesel store downtown.

August 1st I am playing for the boys at NEON. Montreal's own scratch prodigy A-Trak brings his 10 000lb Hamburger Tour, along with Treasure Fingers and Peanut Butter Wolf.

Yes, I am excited.

Finally, August 7th will be the return of our Angel's with Filthy Souls monthly, where Rilly Guilty and I have been holding things down by ways of 80's, 90's, house and techno. Last month was amazing and this month promises to be the same.

I'm gonna be putting together a tech-house/techno mix for late summer/fall - something a bit different than what some of you are use to but different is good - so be on the look out for that.
